It's always been unavailable as source code - it's distributed as binaries-only. If you get a Netgate appliance, you get pfSense Plus, which was called pfSense Factory Edition before the recent renaming. might have you're going to get better answers from Netgate about their appliances. I think that for answers on the details of how much resources plugins need, what impact a complex firewall setup with a lot of rules, etc. It was based on how fast my internet connection is and how many ethernet ports I wanted. Their advice on which box to buy was more general though. Protectli was also very responsive to questions and didn't try to push anything at me. I had asked them a few questions about this kind of thing and I found that they did not try to oversell me, nor were they at all high pressure. Netgate can also give you a good idea of which model you need if you tell them how fast your internet connection is, what plugins you plan to use, etc. Both Netgate and Protectli have some charts showing how fast their devices will route and what kind of speed they'll support for VPNs. It can be difficult to choose what level of performance you need. Some of their models will likely perform better than an APU2, so Protectli would be the way to go if you have gigabit internet and also want to run multiple plugins like suricata, ntopng, pfBlockerNG, etc. They also have documentation on how to install things like pfSense on their systems. Protectli has some very nice systems that would work well.
They do offer the service of assembling the system for you if you want. Unfortunately, they're out of stock on a lot of things right now.
PC Engines has their APU2 products that are good and pretty reasonably-priced. There are plenty of other vendors that sell small fanless PCs that will work well as firewalls, but you'll have to install pfSense on them yourself. Only Netgate can sell systems with pfSense installed and ready to go as "pfSense firewalls."
